PROJECT CO-FINANCED TROUGH THE ESC PROGRAM OF THE EUROPEAN UNION
Outward Bound Romania owns the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) Accreditation since 2021 related to volunteering projects. We created an action plan for the period 2021-2027 with the following objectives:
- to promote inclusion of young people with different backgrounds in order to ensure diversity, solidarity acting among local youngsters and European volunteers, and local community
- to raise awareness about environmental sustainability and to enable behavioral changes for individual responsibility towards consumption habits and greener lifestyle among local young people, short- and long term European volunteers and the local community
- to develop an efficient state management and to build resilience in difficult times among local young people and short- and long term European volunteers
All the activities are co-financed by the ESC program of the European Union
During the first year we implemented:
- Team volunteering for our environment: short term team volunteering program for 20 youngsters from Romania, Portugal, Spain, Austria, Turkey, France, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic in the period 3-18 of September 2022
- Outdoor challenges through solidarity actions: long term individual volunteering program for 8 young persons, 9 month each volunteering session, from Hungary, Romania, Belgium, Italy
Location: Sovata -Outward Bound Romania Youth Center, Gurghiului Mountains and Tirgu Mures
Participants profile:
– age between 20-30 years old
– open minded, love to work with groups of children, youth & adults
– interested in getting practical experience in the field of outdoor education & youth work
– eager to physically and mentally grow through challenging activities & fun adventures
– good written and spoken simple English language skills
– good physical condition, fit and healthy
– highly motivated to participate in the projects

The elements of the short term volunteering program: knowing each other activities, team building activities, expedition, building a yurt, painting outdoor furniture, rehabilitating hiking routes, cleaning the nature/hiking routes
Task of the long term volunteers:
-To assist our training courses (to organize outdoor educational programs for children, youth groups) first as observers and step by step taking more and more responsibilities
-To learn and support the work of the OBR employees in: project management, youth center management, maintaining the equipment, acquisition & logistics, implementing own project ideas
-To support the work of our social workers in the hOrizont program
Results:
- Changed mindset about nature protection and a sustainable lifestyle, gained practical knowledge about changing habits for a more eco friendly lifestyle
- Increased self-confidence , developed key competences in the case of the local and international youngsters who are braver to implement their own ideas and to take initiative
- Young persons more aware of the cultural and social diversity, more open minded to see diversity as a positive aspect and to be more inclusive
